The author of this piece is Richard Bartle, who created the original MUD game.  This is the game which spawned all of the variants of MUD from TinyMUD to LPMud to Diku and beyond.

He's also been involved in gaming and specifically online gaming for quite a while, and has a rather unique perspective.

Please read and feel free to discuss.

A very interesting read. I thoroughly enjoyed it...and I will continue to use it as a reference piece,

It does have some really good points and pointers in there.

Hmmmm...very good...I also run a TinyMUSH game and never thought of its relevance to LotGD...

Shows how demented I can be sometimes...

Some of the features and ideas in the MUSH/MUX/MUD/MOO genre are damn impressive - I am looking at incorporating them into LotGD...like Building and the like...

I love to play MU*-s/Talkers.
I hosted my own, once, and am a semi-admin on one.
I loved this piece, and I have tried to make an XML based game around samurais... and failed dismally;) - so back to LotGD.
Sometimes when I fade, I play talkers.
I've noticed that a lot of my first modules I made had the same functions as previous talkers I've been on. IE: The friend list.

Well, I'll say that some of the concepts for MUSH/etc don't really work well for logd.  It's just a different medium.  You can do things in a dedicated server that you cannot (easily) do in a stateless HTTP medium.

And trust me, I should know.. the JT Traub (aka Moonchilde) who's name should still be all over the MUSH credits would be me Smiley
