Hi,

Hi there,
in the gamesettings u can choose, if a user could have more than one character, but if you allow this, there is nothing else.
so is there a possibility, that u can choose, how many characters a user can have? Maybe 3 oder something?

lg

I'm assuming that you mean characters per email address? In the future, please clarify this.

If so, try this module.

1) There's nothing stopping someone from making more than one account. The only settings are related to character creation are:

Require users to enter their email address
Require users to validate their email address
One account per email address (This is the one I'm talking about)
Allow spaces in user names
Allow admins to enter 'illegal' names in the user editor
Allow player to delete their character

2) I wasn't talking about characters as in letters. I said nothing about letters. I was talking about the number of accounts allowed per email address.

Outside of what Aeolus said, you could just use the alt char list module and than delete one of their accounts via UE. (If you have the Rules module, you can simply state thus and this limits the amount of people who try.)

::EDIT:: Attached for convenience

It is very common for gamers in all games to create multiple accounts.
 - the thinking behind this is to use the alt accounts to boost their main account

True, there is not much you can do to prevent it.
 - gamers will create new acct from work, school or mobile
 - email ? ..there are tons of email services anyone can easily have 25+ email addresses

One Rule I seen that has some degree of effect is:
 - Anyone found with multiple accounts will have ALL but the lowest rank account deleted without warning

To discourage multiple accounts from being used
 - Do not allow any transfer of Gems
 - Do not allow any transfer of Donation Points
 - Allow only a minimal pittance of gold to be transferred
 - Do not allow in PvP ...the winner to collect ALL gold in hand when winning
( this is a very common one used in numerous games:
 - to allow a high rank player, with a crap load of gold in hand, with MINIMAL health ...then let a low level player attack to win and gain a crap load of gold )
 - Do not use any House, Dwelling module that allows gold/gem sharing
 - Have in place the game Rule stated above

Hope this helps you some or at least give you enough things to consider.

Back when my server was allowing 1 main and 2 alternate characters, I had the following rules:

1. all accounts MUST have the same email address.
2. all new characters were run by id, then by email, ip and computer id for matches. if more than 3 were detected, all acounts were celled until I could speak with the person, inform them again of the rule and find out which character they wished to delete.
3. if you played from a public place, such as a library, cafe or school, you were required to send a petition apprising staff of this in order to not get celled.
4. only one stat transfer was allowed per ip.
5. no in-game transfers were allowed

About six months ago, we lifted the limit of characters and now allow an unlimited amount. This was done for two reasons, first, people wished to rp with more than 3 characters, and second, it increased traffic.

Hope this helps.

thank u a lot,

so with this alternate char list can i see how many chars the user have?

my thought was, maybe, that like u did rayn, people can have 3 characters.

but i know, that you can set more than one email adress if u want to.

i would also put rules like no tranfering gold and gems....

now i will think about it, what really do, thank u a lot!

Players create alternative accounts to either help their role playing, or to help buff up their main character account and there's is no real way to stop players from doing the latter as you can't really trust the IP alone as they may be behind a proxy server and cookies can be deleted or different browsers used.

Best to set up some basic easy to follow rules to help players have a good time and then install some mods to keep track of things and use your own judgement as to whether or not someone is breaking those rules.

A good multi account checker is this one here. </plug>

Where possible, please link to a module's download page instead of attaching the file.

I'll note that there are other reasons to create multiple accounts beyond attempting to gain advantage from doing so.  Others have already noted the roleplaying aspects, but I'll add to that two more: Firstly, at least at the start, it's possible to burn through turns very quickly; having multiple characters lets one play somewhat more during the game day.  Secondly, it enables more exploration, particularly when some features are only available to certain classes/races/genders/whatever.

Personally I'm all for players having multiple accounts, with one proviso: If donation points (or other rewards) are provided for referrals then you should stamp down hard on any player who refers themselves or sets up a referral loop with others.  There's no way to do that innocently, and anyone claiming otherwise is being disingenuous at best.
