No you can use ads and it depends on your visits/clicks on how much you earn.

I would just be careful because some of them are Scams though.

If you have a lot of hits (10k+) a day, sure, it might be worth.

Google will not take low-traffic sites.

If you have a lot of hits (10k+) a day, sure, it might be worth.

Google will not take low-traffic sites.

Clarification: That would be 10K+ unique hits, meaning 10K+ daily visitors, not page views.
 - most lotgd sites don't even have 500 daily players*

Game sites are notoriously poor when it comes to generating AD income.
The players come to a free game, forced to view ADS they don't want to see.
 - Getting them to not only click on the AD but ALSO BUY whatever is offered
 - Easy enough for players to block any/all ADS you force on them

*Create a fun to play environment and you will retain players, offer them a unique gaming experience and perhaps then, a few donations may roll in. Do not expect the players to support a site that isn't fun to play or bores the hell out of them after a few days. Maintain game balance, offering Farmboys the best of everything results in them having no incentive to stick around and nothing to look forward to. Some come to play, others play to escape real life for a few minutes. Give them something to look forward to, something to achieve, some goals to meet and some fun tossed in while they are doing it.

There are AD generating sites, some are decent, others will just rip you off.
There is also a few AD incentive sites that allow players to gain in-game boons for clicking and buying the ADS they select.
Google ADs are good, if you generate enough daily unique visitors.

** Just keep in mind the more ADS (crap) you toss into your game, the more crappy your game appears. The players perception will be, you don't care about the game, you only care about generating income.

In my experience, running ads results in around a 50% drop in donations.  The most we've ever earned from ads was about fifteen bucks a day through Project Wonderful.

It's not even nearly worth it.

No, it was more like a hundred a month.  Fifteen bucks a day was the best we ever had with ads, while serving about half a million pages per day.  Remember, with Project Wonderful you sell ad space to the highest bidder, and the bids start at zero (you can set a minimum bid amount, but lots of advertisers just won't bother with you if you do).  Most of the time it's not worth it.

Also remember that your hosting costs will go up with the number of players.  Stock LotGD is hard on CPU.  If you start getting upwards of fifty concurrent players, you'll be looking at a dedicated server at a few hundred bucks a month.  Meanwhile, you'll be losing donations money because everyone'll think you're making money from ads.  Which you won't be.

Take it from someone who's been there and done that, ads don't make you money - they cost you money.
