Ever since upgrading from pr.4 to pr.5, I've gotten quite a few comments from my players that  combat seems a lot tougher. I tried it myself with a couple test characters and found myself getting killed a lot more times in situations where it (normally)should have been an easy win. Even doing battle with my master seemed sort of strange, for example, I was level 12 with maxxed out weapon and armor and more than enough experience and lost!  Tried again after new day and lost again.  This has never happened before.
  My question is:  Did the combat system change in pr.5? I'm running the stock program with absolutely no mods.  I haven't changed any standard game settings since pr.2.
   Another of my test characters had max armor and weapon and 86hp at level 4 and got killed in the forest.  Honestly, the combat system seems a lot tougher.  Can anyone offer some insight into this? Or is it all in my head?  Thanks.....

I have been told the same, although Im not really sure if there has been some modification done or not. Maybe Kendaer can shine some light into this.

So, nothing changed between .4 and .5 with respect to combat except for the cost to break into the inn.  There was the changing of database field from defence to defense, but that would not have caused combat to change UNLESS there had been another previous bug where a piece read defense already but should really have (until now) read defence.  In that case, it still counts as a bugfix however since it was always intended to work the way it now works and wasn't due to a bug.

There was a change *earlier* than .4 where I fixed a bug which had been causing players to gain *constant* power moves in the forest if they were trolls, had a mount which increased offense, or any other offense increasing buff.  This was a bug and it was fixed.

Personally, I'd be telling your users to suck it up right about now, but then I'm well known for being a big old meany.  I am asserting right up that the only changes done to combat have been bugfixes.

Verify that the change when thru on your system completely as it really could be the defense/defence thing.  Search your lotgd folder and databse to make sure that their are no references to defence at all.  If so re-run the sql to update and replace your system files.

I spoke about this with Spider last night in #dragonprime .

The change came into effect in pre 3 and as Kendaer explained it undid constant power moves that players should not have been getting in the first place.

It is more noticeable to players higher up than to low DK players. On Central our solution was to up the power of the mounts slightly. We did NOT up them enough to make it as easy as it was before, however, we enlisted the Gods in helping us test the changes. Most of them were quite positive when we explained that the cause was a bug fix and looked forward to the renewed challenges.

You will find players more positive if you talk to them about any changes you may make to offset this and listen to their input. Spider mentioned that he may up the chance of positive forest specials, which is another option you could use to sweeten your players.

Okay, I dived into my SQL database and did a search on "defence" and sure enough, there are 7 instances of that word in my accounts table.  Can one of you nice people help me out with a sql query to fix this without mucking anything else up? I'll be honest, my php/sql skills are limited.  Thanks!

Try reading: http://dragonprime.net/index.php?board=12;action=display;threadid=485;start=msg5572#msg5572
for one possiable solution...  Also make sure that you ran the following statement on your MySQL database:
# Updates from prerelease.4 to prerelease.5
# YOU MUST TURN ON THE SERVER SUSPEND MODULE, MAKE THIS SQL UPGRADE, UPGRADE
# THE FILES AND THEN TuRN OFF THE SERVER SUSPEND MODULE.  DOING OTHERWISE
# WILL GIVE YOUR USERS ERRORS UNTIL BOTH DATABASE AND CODE ARE IN SYNC
ALTER TABLE accounts change defence defense int(11) unsigned NOT NULL default '1';
ALTER TABLE module_userprefs add key(modulename,userid);

After you get your pre5 version working I wouldn't suggest upgrading again until 9.8 is released as stable.

PS: The last SQL statement can be found in logd-0.9.7-to-0.9.8.sql in your sql folder under the lotgd install folder.

Almost forgot the suspend module can be found in Kend's shared files.

Lets try and be civil...

The above suggested URL by Kermit should correct your issues.

But things like these are really why this is not a production release...This should not be solely run as a production
release unless you can deal with these issues on your own when they come along. Right now support for 0.9.8 is
limited...

Actually, the uses of defence he is probably seeing are most likely in people who are elves who haven't yet logged in and had a new day since this change was instantiated.  The other possible culprit are users of JJ's which had a buff field of 'temp-defence'.

In another thread somewhere I posted a snippet of PHP code which will correct this
Code:
$sql = "select acctid,bufflist from accounts where bufflist like '%defence%'";
$res = db_query($sql);
while($row = db_fetch_assoc($res)) {
  $id = $row['acctid'];
  $str = addslashes(str_replace("defence", "defense", $row['bufflist']));
  $sq2 = "update accounts set bufflist='$str' where acctid=$id";
  db_query($sq2);
}

Go into your super user grotto, then the Run Raw SQL/PHP link, then choose PHP, copy that code in, and execute it.

After that you should find that there are no instances of defence in your database.

Just for info input about more difficult ff in new prerelease:

Although I have not run prerelease.5 yet,
 I can tell you that on central server the forest fights seem the same, or maybe a bit easier this am when I played.

Umm, I have noticed something. In the conversion from PR4 to PR5, I have lost my Forums Link on the main page...

Can someone please tell me how to add it back in?

I am not sure if this is in the right place...

the external links are a module, you should be able to sort it out via the game settings page in the grotto, and then find the external links module.
