Hi all,

Two questions.

First, is it possible to move the paypal link to the bottom.  i.e. place it in the footer?  I can't quite figure it out.

Second question may be more for JT and Eric.  Can I set up a 'donate.php' that had both the paypal/author and paypal/siteadmin links and remove the paypal references from the main pages?  I'm not sure how that fits into the CC license and your wishes as authors.  The last thing I want to do is remove the ability for people to donate to such a great project.  I just want to clean up the interface on a template that I'm designing.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Both of those are possible, however, we would prefer they not be removed or made less prominant.  The reason being is that we get little enough donations as it is.  Making them less prominent just makes it all the less likely for any donations to be made.  If you are designing your own scheme you can move them around the screen pretty much at whim, but we ask that they remain reasonably prominant (ie, on screen when the screen loads and not require scrolling to the bottom to see them)

Thanks Kendaer.  I can appreciate your view and as such I'll work out a method by which to make the paypal links fit nicely at the top of my skin.

I have almost the same question.

I already run a game (different source code) and am looking at using this code base to create a new type of game for my players.

Plan on rethemeing (is that a word?), however based on my experience with my current player base, a lot of them are , um, for a better word , idiots.

However a lot of my players are heavy donators in my other game, and with the bonuses I will be coding in, will most likely be heavy donators in the game I am putting together.

Having 3 different paypal links would possibly result in confusion, especially as I plan on adding some extra "donator only" bonuses.

I am thinking of doing one of two things (if I can):

1. Remove the extra paypal buttons and then I'll just donate to the author/dragonprime myself.

2. Move the paypal buttons to an area that is specifically marked "donations to the below do not give in game bonuses, but please donate to support this code base" (or something like that)

Alternatively, I may even be interested in purchasing a copy of the code base, or working out some other type of deal, if I could just figure out whom I need to speak to.

the code is not for sale so you have no need to purchase a copy for use. the code is open source.

I think the existing default system of the PayPal buttons is confusing, because inexperienced players don't know what the labels mean (for that matter, even the more experienced are sometimes at a loss over it).  I know this has been discussed before, and I seem to recall that CavemanJoe either modified this or discussed possible modifications at some point.

I think we would be better off with a "Donate" button that links to a page that explains what the three options are (and provides those links).  Example:

Quote
Donate

So you've been playing for a while now, and you want to donate to show your appreciation to the people who made this possible, or to ensure that the game stays around and improves, or perhaps you simply want some donation points.  That's great, and donations are cheerfully accepted.  However, Legend of the Green Dragon is the work of very many people, so there's a few ways in which you might wish to contribute.

The original Legend of the Green Dragon code was written by MIghtyE and graciously made available by him for others to use, eventually culminating in the game you have been playing.  (Some brief historical notes about this are available.)  If you want to show your appreciation to MightyE for making this all possible, you can donate here.  [author paypal button]

The latest development efforts, the game source, and the wonderful forum for sharing ideas, modifications, and coding advice are hosted on the DragonPrime server.  (Check it out, you might even find yourself hosting your own version of the game some day.  There's some historical notes about this, too.)  If you want to support continued development of the game and the community, you can donate here.  [dragonprime paypal button]

This particular installation of the game has been created and maintained by someone.  A lot of work goes into running a Legend of the Green Dragon server, particularly one that is highly themed.  It takes considerable time, and often money in order to pay for hosting costs, to keep such a server going smoothly.  If you have enjoyed this game and want it to keep going (and to get even better), then you can donate here.  This option provides in-game donation points, which the previous two do not.  [site admin paypal button]

(I picture this as a borderless table with PayPal links stacked up neatly, but that's neither here nor there.)  Feel free to quibble about the wording, but I think that doing this provides informed donation options in a way that the existing situation does not.  (It does, sadly, introduce another click in the donation process which may cause lossage there.  I  think that is markedly better than having people unhappy because they didn't know that donating to "Author" wouldn't get them donation points, though.)

Apologies for mild threadjack; feel free to move this somewhere more appropriate, Elessa.

See my response here.

I agree, particularly with the addition of the third button, that a change to how the donation links are handled would be appropriate for the next release, although Eric might need to comment on what is and isn't acceptable to him.  Caveman Joe has implemented what I think is a pretty slick method and what I would be inclined to lean towards.
