I may be in the minority in regards to this issue, but I really really don't like the current process of uploading files.  I understand that this is a consequence of going to a more secure forum, but it is currently really intensive to upload files.  Let me explain in better detail what my experience has been:

1.  I write a module
2.  delete the vertxtloc line because that's not functioning anymore (something I miss greatly)
3.  leave the dowload link blank because I don't know what the download link is at this point.
4.  create a discussion board for my new module, leaving the download link open.
5.  create a posting in the upload forum
6.  update my "modules by daves" forum with the new module (download link pending)
7.  Wait for staff to upload my module
8.  Find the location where my module is available for download
9.  Update my discussion page with the new download link
10. Update my "modules by daves" page with the new download link

Now, when I find mistakes in my module or make new tweaks/ improvements, I can then add the new download link into the module.  Of course, I have to post my update in the upload page again.

Before anyone needs to explain why the current system has to exist; please understand that I realize it's a consequence of the new forums.  I appreciate all the work from the upload team taking the time to upload my files.  However, to be honest, it kind of sucks to feel dependent on those great people to have to clean up after me when I make mistakes on my code and burdening them with the work of uploading my new versions.

What I'm hoping for is that there's a vision in the future to change the current system.  Are there plans to develop a system to go back to the old way or something similiar? Or is that an old way that is gone for good and I should just get used to this being the way it is?

It would be really helpful if there was a way of predicting where my module was going to go.  I don't like leaving that spot blank in my modules but there's no way I can get around it right now.  Is there hope?

I agree 100%, Dave.  I'm not happy with the current methods either.  Unfortunately my time is limited and I'm not really able to dedicate the time needed to develop a new method.  Perhaps it's time for a few of us to get together on this and come up with a homegrown solution that meets your needs and my requirements.

Well, I've been having a few qualms about updating my mods as well, seeing as how I have 80+ of them released with new hare-brained schemes in the works.

The thing I see wrong with this new one, is the use of the dls folder, rather than the /users/ folder. Say, example time, CortalUX wished to use his avatar script and I wanted to use mine... we'd both have to name them different filenames, lest they be overwritten by one another. Also, using the /users/ folder keeps things nice and tidy, which is something that I hold near and dear to my heart.

Couldn't the old method be hacked a bit and placed back into this new portal? Wink I have yet to embark into that field of uploading files, but a couple of days working with test code and I am sure  I could join up to make a 'homegrown' solution, as you so righteously put it. Smiley Plus, I am bored, so yeah...

I'm not in favour of reusing the old script without significant changes.  I'll lay out my vision a little later tonight, when I've got a bit more time.

The old script is fraught with security issues which could have left me in a legal bind and shutdown DragonPrime had anybody chosen to exploit it.

Are FTP logins out of the question?

In 99.9% of the cases, yes they're out of the question.  We need something which doesn't require my intervention to activate, or at least the only required activation is something controllable through the portal.

How about using the method that http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?action=postmod;sa=new uses?

I'd say that's a candidate...if we only knew where to get the code for that...

Yes, I could...but not before I poured through the assorted modules which are available, and the forums, to see if the answer to the question is readily available.  Since I don't really have the time to do that right now, maybe someone else could do that... Wink

I emailed two of the Mod Developers asking if they could provide Source Code and if not, if they would be able to point me in the right direction to a good File Managing system for SM.

Was one of the mod developers Mike Mills?  He posted here a while back about possibly helping as well, as I recall.

The system they're using looks like it's along the lines of what I'd like to have here, although we'd need to do some modifications to get a few more features

Mike Mill is one of the Mod Developers, yes. What I was hoping to do was obtain the Source Code and if I do, I will send it to you, Talisman, for further inspection, development and implementation.

any updates?  I'm with Dave on this one.  I have a few modules that I've been sitting on because I don't want to go through all the hassle, especially with version.txt.
