Out of curiousity,

why it was decided to put the function forest () in the common.php and not have that code in the forest.php ?

To answer your question it's because it is called from a couple of different places, not jut forest.php.

This is actually in a lib/* file in 0.9.8.

(look at the healer.php for another example of where this is called from)
