Ahhh, I can't help but think of extremely evil ideas! So anyway, before you scream at me and chase me with pitchforks, here goes my idea:

Once a player reaches a configurable amount of dragon kills (in my server's case, 40 since that's God/Goddess), there can be a rare event where the player gets "demoted". So it would go something like: "Zeus, the king of all the Gods, feels that (so-and-so) did not deserve his divinity. In rage, Zeus zaps (so-and-so) with a lightning bolt, and (so-and-so) feels 5 times weaker (-5 DKs, or something, could be configurable)!

Of course, dragon point spendings would have still been held... it just makes the player... re-do five dragon kills. Cheesy

ye are right... ye are truly evil!

it is not a bad idea actually. but there would be hell to pay when a player has this happen to them. they would be sure to come after ye with the torches and pitchforks.  with the amount of time some players invest into the game, i am willing to bet they would not be too happy with ye.

Haaah, well... I guess it depends, because some of my players are just roaming around now that they've reached the highest rank. I suppose the DKs lost could be... configurable? :O

]:-> no, let them lose e_rand(1,$session['user']['dragonkills']-50)

and make that a 1-100 chance or so

my server has 50 ranks.  i also only hath a few players.

the 'classic' server that is mightye's has 200 ranks.  trust me, it takes years to reach 200 with playing daily on every new day possible. that server has two new days per real day.  due to the time it takes to reach the highest rank, there would be bloodshed should there be a demotion.

Also, ranking shouldn't be the only incentive for players to DK. Set dk limits to certain things/areas that they can only get/see when they reach X DKs. That way they have reason to keep DK'ing to find new things. Smiley

No no, I have that stuff. It's just that some of my players are losing interest because no one can catch up to them in time. =P

so ye are thinking to cause a set back for some who hath been playing longer or are more successful in order to allow others to catch up?

personally, i think this will cause ye to lose more players than retaining the ones ye hath already.

Just my two cents worth, I've played on a site that has taken things away from the 'veteran' players of that site, and made it so that the newer players can defeat them etc.  Believe me its not a nice experience, and after playing that site solely for nearly 2 years, when these changes became so prevalent, even to the point of reducing the random chance of specials that the 'higher' and 'stronger' players could encounter in the forest, I left.  I haven't returned to that site, except to login and ensure my account and place on their hall of fame wasn't deleted.  I won't name this site, but I can tell you i know of quite a few other 'veteran' players on that particular site who have walked away from it because of this.

Add new titles, add other things that they have to explore, but don't do what they percieve as punish them for putting in the time and effort on your site to develop a character, it is not their fault they started earlier, or put the time and effort in.  Instead try rewarding them with smaller things.  Perhaps adding in specials only players over a certain dk can see, or bonuses for them.  But whatever you do, in my opinion, don't punish them for being loyal to your site.

Well actually the original post was put into this thread for a reason. To post an idea for a mod which an experienced coder may or may not consider writing.

As with many mods written, they ALL dont belong in the game or even in every realm. One of the beauty's of LoGD is that the admin can pick and choose which mods to add and or take out of their realm, even core mods which are less than desirable!

I would like to think that the people who post their ideas INTO THIS BOARD arent bombarded with 'why it shouldnt be written, or why it wont work, or why its a bad idea' -- those comments are best for AFTER the mod is written and released, then admin read the comments and decide FOR THEMSELVES wether or not to download and install the mod.

This board is intended for new ideas ...not a bashing of them.
- Lets try to encourage new ideas whether or not they are viable.

Evil is great Cheesy

Someone may well decide to code this. Someone might go with a watered-down version though or an alternative (some of which have been suggested here).

What you might consider doing is as you introduce new areas make them for minimum DK numbers *and* also progressively block areas. For example, introduce the sweetshop and block something else at DK 20 for levels 2 and above. That means that the game changes in appearance as players progress and they can only access say, Petra, if they are level 1. I think that's probably the kind of variety you're after - something like that will force players to plan, and the game will also look different for most of their time. It would require modules to do this though Wink

That has crossed my mind before, actually, but my players are a bunch of whiners.  Wink They don't like changes too often. The vampire module caused a huge uproar! But I think they've learnt to deal with it.  Grin I think I'll just go jot down some more ideas to post up later. Thanks for the idea Saucy! Maybe I'll do that for just a few of the modules.

The way to have changes accepted is to Discuss and Give.

Oldskool Central players block your ears here... you may not like the way I describe this Wink

We had several rigged polls in the MoTD that offered players a "democratic voice" in changes made to Central where the decisions were already made. It is in the way that you word things and in what you offer.

As an example, you can simply make a poll with a description such as:

Many of you are finding the place less exciting as you progress, so I would like to introduce some changes, so tell me what you think!

Poll: Should we add more exciting areas to provide some variety?

[] I would like to see some places only available on certain days so that the admins can add new and interesting areas to explore that make the game more exciting
[] I don't want anything new

* SaucyWench already knows the result of that poll...

You can then return a week later to thank everyone for voting and to reassure them that you have listened to what the players want, and that from now on, once you reach 20DKs, you can only get to Petra's Tattoo Parlour while you're level one, and in addition, Mystie's Sweet Shop will become visible, and that this should make the game more challenging and exciting, and that there will be some more great changes like this soon.
