I recently installed LotGD on my server for the enjoyment of the visitors of an ex-EverQuest message board that I admin.  I also was a BBS Sysop for a couple of years (ProBoard, later Excalibur) and ran LORD throughout.

One change that I really thought was interesting which was made in LotGD was the "contribution point" system, however I see only the name-colorization option being something that can be purchased.  Then again, I've only been poring over all of the admin options for a few hours, so I may be missing other uses of the point system.  I think it is a great way to encourage people to help contribute to our respective sites, especially by referrals, and wish there were more uses for these points -- perhaps a straight point-to-gold conversion which scales with level to help people who just get a DK to gear up a little and to encourage acquisition of points?

I haven't fully browsed about these mod forums a lot but I'm hoping that the mod devs here make use of the potential of the point system to encourage participation and contribution in ways other than monetary donations.

There are quite a few modules which come with the core release and at least have an donation option.

These are (for example):
- customeshop
- customeq (allows you to rename your weapon/armour)
- extrafights (purchase additional forest fights)
- fairydust (a bottle of fairydust, which can give various bonusses)
- golinda (a healer)
- inncoupons (free stays at the Boar's Head Inn)
- namedmount (give your mount a name)
- racestormgiant (a race with a considerable bonus)

There are also several specialties and races which might have donation options and can be found here.

There are many Lodge modules.  Quite a few more than what Xchrisx has even mentioned.

Ahh, pardon my ignorance, I indeed found the rest of the Lodge modules.

Now, how do you guys feel about ways to generate / distribute contribution points, other than paypal donations?  I'd like to stay away from encouraging the use of paypal too much, but still allow / encourage users to contribute to the game and help other users out.

Perhaps some sort of newbie-bodyguard mod which results in contrib points for the person acting as a bodyguard of the lower level, or a gold donation box which gives contrib to those who donate and split the donations to all new users?

I'm not very familiar with developing for LoGD yet so I'm not entirely sure how possible the above ideas could be, or if there are better options available already.

You could also accept bank transfers Wink

Donating gold in a box is not the wisest idea... Better would be gems. Gold is the kind of currency, which is nearly worthless (that's why there's the haberdasher module Smiley )
You could also say: For every 25 dragonkills you will receive 100 donationpoints. Or something like that Smiley

I hand out points for many different things.  Bug reports, Ideas, code.  You could even up the amount given out for referrals.  Gotta be careful there though since you will find lots of multiple accounts that way.

Or you could write a simple module to do what Xchrisx has suggested.  Adding points to a player is rather easy.  Just figuring out how to do it fairly is the hard part.

I agree... you should manually hand out whenever a player contributes his ideas or his time.

I wrote a tiny module called donation day, which adds x points every day and x points every dk to the player (first one hidden, latter displayed to the player) because I don't accept donations and just want them to have coloured names at certain dks or days played. I have a couple of lodge modules, also mount name (sichae) and others, mostly core.

This is a great idea -- letting donation points "regenerate" a bit sotospeak.  Unless told otherwise I will assume that donationday is hosted here and will search around for it in your shared folder.
