I just want to make sure that I'm not doing something either legally or ethically wrong before I do this:

I've noticed that there are a lot of modules that have spelling/grammar errors and it really irks me.  According to the license, I am allowed to make changes to the code (which would include spelling) as long as I surrender the code if asked.  Legally, I don't see a problem with this.

Ethically speaking, I am not a php coder by any stretch of the imagination (though I understand databases and other coding), so I'm wondering how some of the authors might feel if I did this.  What would be the best solution then... should I send the code back to the author with the changes I made?  Should I just post it here?  Different communities have different unwritten rules, and since I'm relatively new to this one, I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

To make a final clarification, I'm not asking to put my name on any of the modules because I made no enhancements to the code... I'm simply a "proofreader" if you will.

There is nothing wrong with correcting grammatical mistakes and spelling errors/typos then using the file on your server.

As a service to the authors, I'd recommend you post your observations in the appropriate place here so that authors can update their files.  For core modules, post in "RAID...", and for third party modules, try to find the original module announcement thread in the modules sections.

* Elessa nods in agreement

i dost not code modules per se. yes, i hath released one (oh boy!), but i do contribute ideas for modules, beta test modules and comb through them finely looking for grammar and spelling corrections for coders who hath asked me to or on third party modules i hath installed.

when i find items i believe should be corrected, depending on the state of the release, i will post the corrections in the thread.  this is especially useful if it is a module that hast just been released and is still having the kinks worked out.

if it is an older one, i will pm the coder with what i hath found.  typically when they get the time, they will incorporate the suggested corrections in their next release of the module.

Shouldn't that be coders?  Jeez Louise, now we have to worry about proofreading the proofreaders?   Grin Grin
