Yeah what we need is a jillion more mods to make the player go beyond total invincibility.

Its rediculous how some LotGD servers are set up.
As a farmboy:
- never dieing
- tons of gems and gold
- Having 50 - 90 attack and defend points
- carrying two weapons
- keeping gold and gems after a DK
- houses to sleep in so no one attacks me
- clans to insure I have the best weapon/armor at level 1

By the time I got to the Dragon, the Dragon was a cake walk, no challange in the game, ergo, no fun or incentive to continue playing beyond one or two DK's.

which is precisely why, when ideas for mods are presented, many of us who hath both played and are admins will suggest having the enhancements available to players after certain dk ranks.

many times the modules are coded so that the admin can set them to behave in a fashion they feel is "balanced" for their server.  we will suggest having that sort of functionality.

it is far better to hath incremental specials become available to the player. it gives them something to look forward to.

the concerns ye describe are many times features that an admin has the ability to address within his game, yet chooses not to. it is obviously a shame that many do not leave "easter eggs" to be discovered by the players as they progress in having more dks.

i believe such things make the game more "realistic" from an ability standpoint of a character just starting out in the world of logd and one who has been there awhile slaying dragons and keeping the forests clear of critters.

why should a text based game be any different than a graphical game like WoW, or NeverWinter Nights? those players/characters do not immediately enter the game world fully maxed when they begin. the characters hath to make their way through learning new abilities, finding wealth and acquiring better equipment as they progress through the game.

suggestions i hath are:

  • do not provide a "new day" button for constant and no more than two or three new game days total (make them want to come back later rather than burning out after a couple days of playing)
  • keep the finding/awarding of gold and gems at a percentage that gets the player the weapons they need as they need them (much more challenging and satisfying to finally buy that weapon or armour that is a couple levels above playing level so i don't die or i can defeat my master rather than being able to breeze through all my turns immediately with maxed out. give the player that sense of "yeah, i finally beat the master! took me long enough!")
  • require a certain number of dks before certain mounts become visible (sorry, but in reality a sixteen year old with a new driver's license doesn't have the experience/skill to drive a lamborghini, nor does a farmie have the experience/skill to handle a dragon/gryphon/unicorn mount)
  • require a certain number of dks before having the ability to carry two weapons (likewise, someone just off the farm will not hath the experience/skill to wield more than an axe, but as they train and slay dragons, their strength and skill should be improving)
  • do not permit gold to carry over in a dk thereby requiring the player to earn what they need rather than being able to immediately have max weapon/armour
  • enable pvp on players in a house so they are not completely immune (or utilise the pvp "opt out/in" feature in player preferences. if the player opts out, then they lose certain benefits that come from having pvp enabled - i.e. more turns from heidi)
  • set limits on clan vault deposits/withdrawals, or hath the ability to turn off the feature entirely. do not permit limitless wealth and transfer of that wealth to be used as personal gain upon a dk
  • if a special encounter will benefit/reward the player with gold/gems/turns/etc. make certain there is risk involved for a loss of gold/gems/turns/etc.  provide an element of uncertainty to the player. ye want them to continue to use a special.

anyway, enough rambling of my personal view in addressing thy concerns. my views are my own and are not necessarily held by anyone else.  they are merely based on what i hath personally hath experienced as a player on multiple servers and as an admin of my own server.

Your views are held by others, too...

They reflect in many ways, what I consider a constant game development for the player...

Yes, players will scream and act like little children, if you have a new feature that will only be available after 5, 10 or 25 DKs... But you have to resist the temptation to give the user what they want when they want it...

Yes, of course, having maxed out weapons on level 1 is great... And if there is a way to make this 1 out of 15 times after a DK that would be okay. But sincerely, where is the fun of playing with godmode-cheats enabled by default?

Users want everything now. But you must not give it to them. If you do so, they will be happy now, bored tomorrow and gone the day after tomorrow... They will proclaim that on other servers this and that is possible, why not here.
Answer to them: Because we are not that and that server. We want to be unique. We want to give you the feeling not to be in a mirror world of some Alice's Wonderland.

Let them hunger for more features. Give them to them, yes. Buit give them slowly! Tons of modules are great - if you can discover them one by one, if there's something new each time you defeat the Green One.

This will keep the game interesting, challing and addicting to your players much more than throwing around with gems and gold and attack points.

Just ask them if what they are looking for is a game that is basically "please press start to win!" and if that's what they are looking for, tell them you are not that.

On my RPG I have a mount thats over 5 billion gold and over 3 billion gems. Its so cool. Onley me and the other Admin has them. And then if you get 700 DKs you can LOOK at it. Other than that you can onley get a bike that gives you 5 extra travel untill 70 DKs. But there is 24 new game days per real day (I am too nice) A hour a game day? I am too nice.

Now, now...each to their own tastes.

She'll learn soon enough that such generous and unbalanced settings take the fun and challenge out of the game ever so quickly.
