On phpbb and IPB, I generally use "Posts since last visit", and "Your posts" to track the threads I've responded to. Alternatively, I can use the profile to see all posts by a user (me), and follow the threads I've posted to that way. Finally, if those two don't work, I can use search, and search for a user's (me) posts, and follow THAT way.

I don't see any of those options here, and I'm a little baffled on what I can do to have similar functionality.

The search doesn't appear to work at all. I tried searching for posts in the last day, searching for posts by me, posts by other users, posts containing a phrase - all "End of results" with none given.

So, short of selecting to get an email for every reply to every thread I post in, is there any functionality that comes close to the (extremely common) functions mentioned?

Very frustrating.

As Talisman has stated, countless times, when the people that create the source code for this forum decide to release their newest one, he shall update. Until then, you can make due with other ways:
  • Click your name, scroll to bottom, select amount of posts, and then search through them to find the ones you want
  • Subscribe to the thread, and get emails when an update is made
  • Go into each forum and find what you are looking for
Honestly, I have been here for much longer than most and I have yet to find this a problem.

Yeah...it does leave a lot to be desired...

- No, I do not intend to switch to phpbb or other forum code.  I'm not happy with their portal integrations, and I have looked at them.  Upgrade paths are also a problem.

- Yes, I am eagerly awaiting the crew at Lunabyte Systems to release the SMF compatible version of this forum, then I will be able to upgrade to newer forum software which includes many, if not all, and more of those features.

- The search function works, you just need to change the search parameters a bit:  Search for posts by anyone, and search for posts in the last XXX days (defaults to 60 days, which isn't real effective in this forum)

I didn't bring that up. I simply mentioned the core functionality that I use on two alternatives, on the 15+ forums I visit a day *isnt* here, and it makes contributing here extremely painful. I just want to know HOW to do what I need to do, using the software you've chosen. Smiley

Its been two months since I last heard you say that. When is the planned release, and if there isn't a planned date, is there a point at which you will change regardless?

I'm not trying to stir trouble, I'm just frustrated.. its a fairly simple set of things I'm trying to do, and it can't do even that.

Please explain how. I feel stupid asking, but I tried for an hour to get *any* searches to work.  I just did exactly what you said, and got no results. I changed last days to 1, 5, and 30. No results. I changed search to "any" member instead of the default. No results.

I can't get the search to give *any* results, no matter what I do. Please explain how to use the search function, since clearly my expectations are quite different from what it delivers.

I didn't ask him to update. I asked how to use the forum software.

  • Click your name, scroll to bottom, select amount of posts, and then search through them to find the ones you want
I'm happy to provide a screenshot, but my page doesn't show such magic. It shows the 30 most recent posts, period. That doesn't show me threads I'm involved in, and when you visit less than once a day, it doesn't solve the problem.

  • Subscribe to the thread, and get emails when an update is made
I mentioned that, and its hardly a substitute.

  • Go into each forum and find what you are looking for
I've contributed to.. oh wait, I cant check how many threads I'm in. Lets just say its less than 5% of the threads here. Digging through dozens of threads that I don't honestly remember the title of just to contribute is expecting a bit much.

Honestly, I have been here for much longer than most and I have yet to find this a problem.
Thats you and your needs.

- You visit every day, usually multiple times a day
- Almost every thread is of interest to you
- You don't use phpbb and ipb on 15 other forums a day, and primarily use the two features mentioned on each of them to manage the chaos.

Each changes the equation of your needs and my needs substantially. I'll respond to your global claim that "you have yet to find this a problem", with the equally global claim that multiple forum software packages have it for a reason, and I *do* find it a problem.

I'm just asking how to use the forums, and the response is well.. not so helpful. Smiley

I know you're not trying to stir up trouble - much of my answer was in anticipation of follow on questions from others in that vein.

As a developer, I'm sure you understand how difficult (impossible) it is to get release dates from project managers, and the one I'm waiting for is no exception.  They are now telling us "Soon, next few weeks", but there is little we can do until then.

No, I don't intend to upgrade at any point until the new one is released.  I use too many features of the portal which are not supported by the standalone forum, so I will be awaiting the full and proper upgrade path to the new portal/forum combination.

I'm sure you know that the more words in your search, the less likely a match unless you select something other than "Match all Words".  In the drop down box "Search -All- Members Only", change to "any poster".  Under "Max Age Since Last Post", change days to something bigger than 60 days.  I normally use 600.

I was trying for even simple one-word searches. No results.

Very odd.. increasing the days did produce results, and I would have expected exactly the opposite.

However, the search for posts by user isn't producing any results, even with those changes. Any hints on that?

hmmmm... with some experimentation i hath discovered that it is definitely not possible to do a "user only" search unless ye go specifically to the person's profile, select number of previous posts and scroll through them.

ye can, however, in the "search" function, search by user only if ye also use a "search for" keyword.  if ye hath an idea of the topic then it is possible, otherwise the only option appears to be through the individual's profile.
