Actually the algorithm is a bit more complex than that.  it shows them based on an 'activity' metric.  More active servers will be toward the top.

Don't you think that maybe placing lower traffic games at the top might help to bring more traffic to those games? I think that it would be cool if the games list helped to attract traffic to game hosts a bit better.

i dont think lower traffic is a good thing to base it on.  usually, there is a reason for it having lower traffic.  and if so, then it surely does not belong at the top.

i might be able to be persuaded into thinking that *new* servers might have a higher ranking, and gradually have less and less rank as the days go on.

I didn't decide on the ranking.. MightyE did.
However, I tend to agree with him that higher traffic/active servers belong at the top of the list.

The point of lotgd.net is to show where people are playing so that you can interact with them.  This is best accomplished by giving them the more active servers first since those can likely support thei higher number of players, etc.

Heh.. maybe everyone else sucked more than you?  Actually I changed this code a bit last night (in order to support the new logdnet display which can be seen on logd.dragoncat.net and on lotgd.net)

One of the things which has changed is that logdnet descriptions are going to be limited to 75 characters.

If people want to start having the more full information showin in the listings from the 0.9.8 servers, they should add '&version=$logd_version' to the logdnet update string in login.php.

And of course, in the returned rows from the server you can access $row['version'] if you want to modify your display to contain it.

That's a very good idea.
I made the changes, but then both of the servers I'm coding for went to the bottom of the serverlist and stay there. Why is this?

The submitted version string isn't an official version ("0.9.7-jt-ext-GER" right now), but can this really be the reason? Is there a check for version naming? Some rules for admins maybe?

I guess "Unknown" ranks higher than "0.9.7". But why is 0.9.8 on top then?
Well, I removed version submitting for Pandiswelt again but my server still submits its version for further tests. I noticed that version strings with more than one space in it were cut off. "0.9.7+jt extended (GER)" became "0.9.7 jt" and "0.9.7 jt ext (GER)" became "0.9.7". "0.9.7-jt-ext-GER" works fine. Smiley

I'll look into the space issue as that sounds like a bug.  Or actually.. did you do "&version=".urlencode($logd_version)? Smiley You need to do that Smiley

As for the sorting, right now it's a strict alphanumeric sort (strcmp) in the code except that the 'main version' is sorted to the top (in this case 0.9.8-prerelease).

I plan on extending this sorting algorithm a bit and forcing 'unknown' to the bottom of the list.  Within each versions, sorting is by popularity.

That's it. I really should have noticed that on my own i guess Shocked Thanks Smiley

If your game options are set up to connect to lotgd.net, you will appear in there, that's it.

just wondering if you have changed this anymore since.  Spider's server with 26 players is one of the top ranked servers.  some others seemed to be a little off.

Are there any plans to add sort methods?  by language, version, players, etc

No.. it hasn't been changed.. The reason Spiders shows up where it is is because of alphabetic sorting of names which is what occurs after the version sorting.

It will always be sorted by version first with 'official' versions being at the top of the list and then unofficial versions.  Within a major version group all the spaces are removed and then a case insensitive string comparison is performed.

This means that '0.9.7+JT, 0.9.7+jt, and '0.9.7 + jt' are all considered to be the 'same' version  within the same group (0.9.7).   Within the same version, the servers are sorted by 'popularity' which is a function computed at logdnet based on how frequently the server gets logins and how long passes between logins.  Popularity decays over time if no logins occur.

No there are no plans on offering other display options.   The ordering is provided by lotgd.net, NOT by the local server and there are no plans to change that.
