I have been playing with the addcommentary/viewcommentary functions, trying to add a line to the commentary "So and So has entered the room" for my commons area and have not been able to find a solution.  Anyone understand the options for this function better than I?  Also been thinking maybe somekind of javascript or java function that will check the database for new commentary and then notify someone of new content so they can refresh the page.

This is well beyond the scope of what "Addcommentary" can do. If you check out your common.php, you'll see what "addcommentary" actually is. It's just a basic PHP script, which means it's essentially stateless.

Being such, I don't think you'll be able to get it to acknowledge when someone enters or leaves the room. A java app could do it, but that means you'd have to setup a javascript area, then revert back to a basic PHP site in the rest of the game. Kinda strange, but that's probably the way to go.

Yes, I had looked at addcommentary and viewcommentary.... as it is viewcommentary uses javascript to post the messages... I have looked at this and have been looking at a way to simply automate the submission of  a message to add the notifications.... However it's not really a important feature as the commons shows you at the top of the page who else is there.

You could try a flag in the accounts table that turns on when they enter the chatroom then turns off when they leave it or go offline. Then have a listing of everyone with that particular flag on.

Very server specific, but that's probably how I'd approach it to keep it low tech. Make sure you have a "sleep in fields/logoff" command right there that tags them out of the chat and probably have the timeout script also turn off that chat flag (or else everyone that logged off in the room would stay there)

It  already has that... and I am experimenting with the same flag and code in multiple locations.  It shows players where other players are... I have even used the code for limited player interaction in other areas (users can dump water from a tower on the heads of those below).
