Just a small question, but some of my players have been asking why they can't have codes [`c-`n-`i-`b] in thier bio, as they could in 9.7. I just thought i would bring it up, and ask if there is a way i can chagne this.

i believe the reason this ability was removed was due to players neglecting to close the tags.  there would be resulting bleed over into other portions of the game.

kendaer or someone, please correct me if i am wrong.

Nope, you are exactly completely and totally right.

Basically people used it to make things ugly  therefore it got removed since there was no good way of fixing it.

What about checking the global $nestedtags; and if one returns to true, putting the end tag in?  Smiley

Doesn't actually work.

In order to *try* and do that right,you'd have to do it to every output statement, but many multi-line output statements assume that you carry over open tags from the previous statement.

Doing it just for commentary *would* be possible, but I also happen to think that too much bold and italic and center, etc would make those pages look worse then they already do with the riot of colors.

The answer is no.

I've been on servers where users could make their names and their texts bold, italic, etc as much as they wanted...and once my eyes recovered from the visual assault, I clicked "Log Out" and never returned...

I've been on a server like Talisman's and I'd hate it to be anything like that.
I don't mean for every output statement, I mean for Bios and Bios only- it's a users own page, and if they want to make it completely unreadable..
Edit: I must be tired.. I thought the thread was about Bios.
Edit2: It is..
Edit3: I'm going mad

let's say we allow them in bios. and players x, y and z decide to use them. they don't close the tags thus breaking their bios, and possibly navs. next thing you know there are people reporting the broken bios over and over. I say no thanks =)

It would follow on by breaking the moderator's bio review page too.

Breaking links for getting, say, back to the grotto.

I have better things to do than fix my OWN staff let alone every player who got stuck from some random tag broken elsewhere... like in the list warriors page... "help help i clicked bio and now i can't get out"... blah.

Issue = dead, Xander, it's a too hard basket. Feel free to go around it, but don't say we didn't warn you.

Eh, when i ran 9.7, i just blocked offending bios, and made it clear in MoTDs that they either close the tag or they dont get to use the funtion.

Like i said, it was just somthing i was pondering...

By the way, i prefer not to go by Xander anymore, if you please.

When the users save it, and at no other point, you could use a preview function to check all global $nestedtags, and then if one of them is true after previewing it, don't let them save it.
Edit: I'm seceding from this topic o_O

It's still a valid referent to you though.. since some people prefer to not read things by Lord Xander.  Now they know who else to avoid.  (and no, I'm not actually someone who ignores anyone.. just saying for those who do)

Just ignore that edit. You could stop users breaking tags, with this code.
Code:
function nfix() {
   global $nestedtags;
   foreach ($nestedtags as $tag=>$status) {
      $x=$tag;
      if ($tag=="font") $x="0";
      if ($tag=="div") $x="c";
      if ($status!==false) {
         output_notl("`$x");
      }
   }
}
running nfix(); whenever you want to fix the tags.
