Just a little thought....

I am aware of poaching taking place on many servers - it is a major concern and and even bigger annoyance for site admins and players everywhere...

I cannot speak for everyone but I am sure that something needs to be done...

I have spoken to quite a few other admins and have made a mutual banning agreement for those who poach from my server and vice-versa...

The reputation that is lost from this act is tremendous as it is almost always expected that the head admin has put people up to it for game rewards and such...luckily - as my site is rather new I have been able to stomp it rather fast....

Any feedback at all would be great as I think that we could stop this fairly quickly...

As you will see - I am easily contactable lol and would accept any similar agreements with other site owners...This is a community after all and evne though I am a rank amateur - NOOB if you will - I think the community would benefit from this idea...

Would particularly like the game developers' input and look forward to talking to anyone with ideas...

As in those stupid bastards that come to your site, and ritualistically YOM everyone on your server, in order to bring them over to theirs.

ah...

the roaches.... step on them when you get a chance.

I also suggest taking a look at the troublemakers thread.

That's also why I have two accounts.  One admin and one not.  helps in ferreting those insects out.

Yeah...I have several...and I am working on a module to allow Head Admins to click a "Create Alt" button and create a random character with a random IP that expires at the end of each session...Getting a bit of help as it is tricky for me who has little coding knowledge lol...but will in essence leave a Site Admin with virtually limitless spies with minimal DB space...

The idea of the randomised IP (unless anyone can think of anything better) is to make sure even the other staff do not know who it is...

Thanks for the point in the right direction, Dannic - will check troublemakers thread now

Just saw the Troublemaker's thread.......that name has plagued me since I started...

All evidence points to Brendan and another - blackeyes - in the hacking of my site...was up for ages reinstalling - putting the backup DB into action....

He needs a stomping....

But anyways...he is perma'd and del'd - as is blackeyes

If I am wrong - sue me...but the server has been going fine since then...

You already, automatically, have Central's cooperation with that.  We disallow URLs in chat for precisely that reason. We have in the past communicated with the server admins when we have persistant spamming of links, to organise a dual ban.

From our perspective we are more likely to mute the player than ban them if they do it. Either way, they are stopped from doing it.

Thanks a bunch, SaucyWench...

Good to know steps were already in place to combat this irritating and potentially devastating pasttime...

I concur with the idea of muting the accounts but in the heat of the moment after wresting control back my first instinct was to grab the ban and del stick lol...

Will remember the advice and utilise if this ever comes up...

*certainly hopes it doesn't Wink

I had a very retarded poacher come to my server a few hours ago. Retarded thing is...He never YOM'd anyone else, but rather YOM'd me (the superuser and Emperor).

I actually had a convo going with him on why he was so retarded....

Common dude, at least message players and not the admin.  Shocked

I've had two players YOM me asking me to show them how to, or set up a new LoGD game for them.  I think my game is fairly well set up, but I really don't have any active players to speak of.  So why target my game?

Jerry's game could always use some new players.  We should all play there.  You get 10,000 gold to start at level 1, so it's real balanced and challenging.

And MetalDragon, the question is, "What is six times nine?"

Thousands of MySQL servers around the world are being infected with a worm which could facilitate a massive denial-of-service attack.

Security experts have warned that thousands of MySQL servers around the world could be press-ganged into launching a denial-of-service attack that could bring down the Web site of a company the size of Microsoft.

A worm, dubbed MySpool by security organisation SANS, is spreading rapidly amongst the MySQL user base. It automatically exploits MySQL servers and subsequently infects Windows systems when triggered by an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) server located in Sweden

I saw this at the Postnuke site I havent looked into it has any one els heard of this?

I haven't, but I'm going to look into it, and forward info to my webhost and make sure they know about it.

And off-topic, I'll take this Terran variation of the Pan Galactic Gargle-Blaster, since the ingredients for the proper version are had to come by on this planet. http://www.webtender.com/db/drink/3472 (I used to write articles for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy before Douglas Adam's died and the BBC took over his website.  Here's to hoping the movie is true to his spirit and comedic style).
