What is the proper way to display a variable players name? For example, when player A trips the module it stores their name so that when player B trips it it shows player A's name. I looked through the stocks module and thought I had it figured out, but apparently not.

Well just everytime it does a new save.

like stocks being a good example:
set_module_setting("victim", $session['user']['acctid']);

It is just saving the acctid to the victim module preference.

I hit the module...
 set_module_setting("victim", $session['user']['acctid']);

Now Arune is in the stocks...

You hit the module..

set_module_setting("victim", $session['user']['acctid']);

Now you are saved as being the victim.

That's what I thought. I'll have to take a closer look at what I've got.
