1  Game Administration, Installation and Configuration / Game Administration Chat / Re: Make me an admin, please on: June 24, 2009, 06:57:30 PM
Hot top: I have the "keys" to Eric's server. It was several years before I was given the master key to access everything on the server, and it was given only because it was needed.

I still don't have the "key" to the safe inside. Eric's cpanel and PayPal are his and his alone. Because - I don't need access.

I find it amusing every time some random person wanders in and actually expects a total stranger to give them access to their server. Admins should avoid giving out access as far as possible! If you and a real life buddy can run it yourselves, don't start grabbing sidekicks!

And I still find it incredibly sad when a few silly admins grant just that. Anyone considering letting some random player help out as admin, here is something important to know. My business partner is a very wealthy bank manager from the Kingdom of Ingushetislava, and recent military action means that he is unable to get his wealth of US$35,000,000,000 out of the country. I am in urgent need of your assistance in this matter and as a reward can offer you US$1,000,000.00 (One Million Dollars) in return for your bank account details, social security number, full name and address, date of birth...
2  Game Administration, Installation and Configuration / Newbie's Corner (The Isle of Wen) / Re: how to edit pages on: June 24, 2009, 06:36:28 PM
*dusts the cobwebs off her shoulders *

1. The person people are trying to deal with does not seem to be the original thread poster
2. I also see no indication that dragon's first language is not English
3. DarknessFalls is correct in a roundabout way: there is DEFINITELY a communication and understanding problem here. Dragon does not understand basic internet/admin prerequisite language; the others do.
4. "all i asked is what im to change in the coding" - he never asked that at all - and the manner of asking indicates he doesn't quite understand what he wants to ask, ie, well beyond the scope of support offered.
5. "and how to work the php and mysql" - how to *work* it? Anywhere that he might have read about mysql and php (Dragonpedia checklist; or installation guide written by me) indicates he is required to search any understanding he's lacking. I am quite sure neither says "come to DragonPrime and ask someone to teach you word by word". In addition, saying that you want to work it suggests you haven't made any attempt to even figure out what it is.

Sigh. Yes it's possible to admin a game without ever dealing with mysql and PHP, but someone had to have set it up for you for that to be the case. If you're not prepared to understand these *OR* locate and follow an idiot's guide (as I did, since I was an idiot) then I guess you don't really want a server after all. You will note that the installation guide linked below does not specify understanding how to use them. In fact it tells you "click this, find that, make one of these, call it this, voil". So yeah, a mysql "idiot" can install the game successfully. I'm living proof. However, a lazy internet beginner? No.

Dragon228, read and complete http://dragonprime.net/index.php?page=installation and if you are still stuck, come back and start a new thread. People will assist you if you are able to state that you have done everything in that list in order and still have problems.

But the effort has to be yours.
3  Game Administration, Installation and Configuration / Newbie's Corner (The Isle of Wen) / Re: Ella doesn't like us o.o on: December 09, 2007, 10:01:44 PM
I wrote Ella so here's your answer... there are two very different versions of Ella as Tal indicated, mainly depending on whether you have pre-v1.0.6 or 1.1.0 and later (I'm fairly inactive these days so if someone edited it after v1.1.0 they'll have to give you some more info).

Each version will allow you to convert different stats but otherwise work in the same way.

When Ella refuses to allow a player to dance, it's because the player doesn't have enough "extra" of the stat concerned. This is because the module has "prescribed minimums" below which the player is not allowed to go - if she allowed them to, they'd end up permanently dead after the next dragonkill (dragonkill removes 140 hitpoints as you move back to level 1).

To my knowledge all "core" converter modules released for 1.0.6 have these checks in place (for example tynan and the gauntlet) so that your minimum stats must be:

Hitpoints: Level x 10
Attack: Level + Weapon*
Defense: Level + Armour*

You then must have enough of the appropriate "extra" in order to "trade" the stat away with Ella, Gauntlet, Tynan, etc.

For Hitpoints, you also have global and module settings for whether they're retained over a DK - the minimums are calculated off "base" hitpoints. (I think a couple of modules actually take away a permanent HP or three... but the "core" modules from 1.0.6 do not.)

Give your admin char 30 extra hitpoints and a few extra attack and defense, and try Ella again.

* -1 or +1 from the smyth are NOT counted in the totals
4  Game Administration, Installation and Configuration / The Idea Place / Re: removing the specialities on: October 03, 2007, 02:57:14 PM
Nothing happened with the idea, I don't remember actually doing the "no specialty" module. Sorry.
5  Game Administration, Installation and Configuration / Installation and Configuration Assistance / Re: Help me if you can on: August 15, 2007, 01:19:11 AM
The kindest advice we can offer right now is twofold.

You haven't enough skills to host this game and you certainly haven't the skills to host it at home as a public server - this is a big security risk, if I managed to get into your superuser account the damage I could do is nasty.

Please take some time to skill yourself up via the links under "Resource pages" here on the left and with the mass of information in the Wiki. LoGD is not for beginners and by the looks of things you're trying to learn as you go - it is going to be plagued with confusion and you'll feel very very lost. Try a simpler game first such as Kill Monster.

Generally that error tells you to look at the lines immediately before. Get yourself a good text editor with colour syntax and brace matching and life becomes a lot easier.
7  Village Square / General Discussion Area / Re: Darkhorse tavern on: August 09, 2007, 10:58:02 PM
I strongly recommend that you, as an admin, learn how the game *plays*. Play through as a normal player for at least one dragonkill and preferably five to ten. There are a lot of questions from your players that you won't be able to answer if you aren't an experienced player yourself. Smiley
8  Village Square / General Discussion Area / Re: Source code and secrets on: August 09, 2007, 01:02:48 AM
It is possible to write modules doing most of this and they can still qualify as withheld even if your core is changed. The caveat is that they must also be able to function on an untouched core. Provided they would work, you could withhold them.

But as I understand it Ajax has vulnerabilities allowing people from outside to access things they shouldn't... ensure nobody could write their own routine and access their own stats (or anyone else's).
9  Village Square / General Discussion Area / Re: Blank page on: August 09, 2007, 01:01:06 AM
No, it is completely expected. Your new host hasn't got the same memory limitation.
10  Game Administration, Installation and Configuration / Newbie's Website Admin Help / Re: What happend here!??! on: August 09, 2007, 12:58:22 AM
OK, let's work backwards. What kind of normal experience makes this happen?

If you had stayed out of the village a long time, and a bunch of people had suicided on you, when you returned you might get hunted down... then be able to (theoretically) level up 14 times. However, the exp would not show 0.

This COULD happen if someone had touched the experience array in the core, however... check what it is!

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 285148 bytes) in /www/freehyperspace.com/l/o/g/logd/htdocs/lib/modules.php on line 45
I don't know what this means...

This is not a LOGD error. It's a PHP error. PHP errors are generally outside what we can support here (unless they're extremely common). Try looking in Google if backflip's help doesn't fix it.

Give your mate this

13  Village Square / General Discussion Area / Re: Blank page on: August 08, 2007, 12:57:43 AM
Roll Eyes

extract the file into your main lotgd directory and see what file you uploaded broke your game.

If I read this correctly, DON'T put it in the modules folder....
14  Village Square / General Discussion Area / Re: Source code and secrets on: August 08, 2007, 12:48:20 AM
However, I think there are not much php coders out there

At a guess, you might get one or two who grab the code to get answers. More people would be figuring it out by thinking, trying, trying again, and working it out geekily Wink And that's actually good, because any game that has that kind of addiction will get a lot of players.

While adding new aspects of core code needs modification, you *REALLY* should learn module coding. "Donators get a boost" is something you can do with a module... and has the added affect that other modules can interact to change that value in ways that only the imagination can limit - one example is the moons file JT wrote, so you could have some situation where donators get an advantage but on full moons they are equal to everyone else and the vampires get the only real advantage, and not the married ones! (Just an idea... but you get the point, you can make it complex so they have trouble working things out.)

Have you made sure this person doesn't have GAME DEVELOPER flag?

This screams "Superuser Gain Level" to me...
