And like, if you request a module and someone is generous enough to take the time to make it for you, please don't alter the code

Open source is all about the ability to alter the code to do what you like.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with changing a module to meet your tastes.  What IS wrong is not sharing your changes when requested as is required by the license under which everyone is permitted to use (and alter) this code.

and change the author to your name.

Original author name must be maintained, but if you change the code and subsequently share the module you can add your name to the author credit.  See elsewhere in the forums for more discussion on the right way to do that.

Shit like that is just brutal, y'know, DF?

Keep the language here clean and the comments drama free.

That's the beauty of test servers, development servers and things like WINAmp, so all development can be done away from the main site.
33  Game Administration, Installation and Configuration / Game Administration Chat / Re: Question about module author display. on: January 18, 2015, 11:10:20 PM
That would strike me as being a bit intrusive, really.  Remember that this is open source which means you are permitted to modify the code provided that proper attribution is given.  As long as the attribution is properly stated in the author property then removing that in game display is fine.

Have you checked out the Resource Pages on the left?
35  Village Square / General Discussion Area / Re: Classic Server Down on: October 13, 2014, 10:57:53 AM
The classic server and logdnet list server are still both owned and maintained by MightyE independently of DragonPrime.  I'm not sure what's happening with them or when they'll be back online.

Everyone who emails me gets activated. It's just a question of when I get to it.

This is something you need to check with your webhost.

Be civil.  I don't have time for this snarky BS here.  (If you don't see the snarky BS, it's because I wasted some of my life deleting the useless comments.)

If you don't want to take part in what Tucher is proposing, don't take part in it.  We've established that.

We don't need to repeat it multiple times, and we don't need these insults being thrown around.  And you don't want me enforcing a stoppage of that.

License - will not be changed.  I don't have the right to make any changes to it, and MightyE will need some very persuasive reasons to modify it.  Dependent upon the quality of the project, a release under DragonPrime may be possible but I can't commit to that at this point.

Team Discussion - yes, I could set that up here in Dragonprime should there be enough interest.

Subversion - this might be a good place for kickme to pitch in, as he has done a fair bit of work on the code beyond the current released version.  Whether it is a good launching point or not, only he can advise on that.   We could discuss the viability and willingness to open the DP subversion for this project.

Maybe you can upgrade the forum software?
The footer says we're running version 1.1.13, the current as stable mentioned version of simple machine forum ist 2.0.7

Yes, I am aware.

The next update I do will totally nerf the downloads system, portal pages and everything else we have setup.  Ready for that?  I'm not.
41  Village Square / General Discussion Area / Re: DP Account Activation on: April 02, 2014, 12:34:02 PM
And yet, I have friends who have emailed in to the email at the bottom of the page several times, over the span of several months, but to no avail.

Is there no way to filter the spammers out? I noticed DP uses a captcha, but it seems that's useless.

The captcha is useless, which is why I'm manually validating even though I would rather not.  The amount of spambots who register daily and would be posting unfetterred is way too high.

However, I don't necessarily check my email on a daily basis and I don't look in my spammail box.  It too, is inundated.

No link?
Not required to provide one.

That's because Stephen thinks he's so clever and cryptic by hiding what others may need to know, he doesn't care about others.

As I said. Grin Don't mention it in the first place if you're not going to explain. However, since you have stated elsewhere that you've fixed it in your own version of the code, as per the license, I would like a copy of the fixed code. Cheesy
No can do. Lost it Tongue

Now that is hardly the spirit of this site, or it's purpose.

This isn't the place to be an ass about something like this.  If you know of something that should be fixed share it.  Otherwise go troll somewhere else because it isn't welcome here.
43  Important Stuff - You need to read this! / DragonPrime Announcements / Re: Is LoGD still alive ? on: March 25, 2014, 04:42:35 PM
Let's keep it friendly here, and cut out the insults.  This is a drama free zone.   Roll Eyes

The LoGD project is open source.  This means anybody can make changes to it provided they follow the requirements put forth in the license.  It also means someone can come in and say "Hey, who wants to work with me to do some updating".  If you don't trust that person, don't join him.  If the proposal interests you, talk to him for more.

What we don't really need here is people making a new user with ideas feel like he's unwanted trash.  So that stops now.

No, there is no active core team although I, through Dragonprime and the license exclusions MightyE granted to the Dragonprime team do retain that identity.  Unfortunately the active coders of the day fell victim to the same thing that has befallen so many others - life gets busy.

So, in short...be kind to each other; be open to new ideas; if you're not interested, wander off.
44  Core Code Development Discussions / Version 1.2.0 Development / Re: Welcome to 1.2.0 on: March 09, 2014, 09:30:08 AM
Is it not possible to bring out an official v1.1.3 that includes all the bug fixes and patches to cover all the php/mysql changes since the last release?

This game is very "Plug and play" which is good for new comers, until thy have to start editing countless files to get it to work. Smiley

Definitely! Have you seen the number of errors reported in the past 5 years? xD Luckily, I've got a copy of the core code with all reported errors fixed.

Why does this not surprise me?

That would be because after a decade, the core group who were working on it have moved on to other activities and pursuits.  All the work put into what exists now was volunteer and at no profit, just as I lose money on this website year after year and haven't actually played or coded on the game in over 5 years.

If you have a modified copy of the core code with all reported errors fixed, I assume you're making it available to anybody who asks for it, as required by the license of course.

So, DP's 10th Birthday.. Any birthday news on the fabled and mysterious 1.2.0? Wink Grin

It should be rather evident at this point that what you see is what you get...
