Title: Alignment Augmentation: Is there any interest in something like this:
Post by: DaveS on March 25, 2006, 08:06:28 PM
Currently, the Alignment systems is based on the Good/Neutral/Evil part of alignments.  Many classic Dungeons and Dragons players  are familiar with another aspect of Alignment; the Lawful/Neutral/Chaotic aspect.

I would consider taking a crack at this (after I finish my Signet Series Modules) OR I would give support to someone interested in writing a module that acts similiarly to the Basic Alignment module but instead tackles this "other side" of alignments.

Essentially, here's my thoughts on how it would work:
1.  It would be independent of the Basic Alignment Module
2.  A major function would be to identify players that seem to work "for" or "against" the "Law" (aka staff) of the site.
Examples:
A.  A player that submits helpful petitions would get extra points thereby pushing them towards becoming Lawful.  This would reward players that have been helpful to the site.
B.  A player that tries to get around censors or violates rules/has a history of bannings would get points subtracted thereby pushing them towards becoming Chaotic.

This system might help the Staff identify players that they need to "keep a closer eye on" by noticing that that they've been tagged as Chaotic; or on the flip side help staff know which players may be more trustworthy for helping to debug problems.

Overall, players would then have two separate Alignment modules that indicate more of their nature; making a total of 9 different Alignments possible:

Lawful Good
Lawful Neutral
Lawful Evil
Neutral Good
True Neutral
Neutral Evil
Chaotic Good
Chaotic Neutral
Chaotic Evil

Does this seem like it might be helpful/useful?

The only concern I would have with this is players who would shoot to be chaotic.  This may have the adverse effect of encouraging misbehavior.  Unless, this would only be viewable to administration.

If that was an issue, it could even have a setting to be visible only to staff.

I like the idea (as a veteran roleplayer in AD&D and others).

Yet it's hard because many modules even support alignment, and to distinguish chaos and law it would need a good handful of experience to program something like that.

true neutral != neutral ...so the standard neutral should be in there.

AND
I would just enhance the alignment with the extra function... performance issue. I don't need to require more function. align(-1) or aligntendency("-1") with 1=chaos 100=lawful would be enough.

the main issue is: what could be chaotic, what lawful, then again, what good, what evil.
this is in fact not easy to decide in situation where you have to decide... would need some development.

I'm wondering if maybe this would be more of an administrative tool than utilized in modules.

This is one of those ideas that can be tossed around a while before I (or anyone else) wants to take a shot at some type of implementation.

i think i understand precisely what daves is proposing. this is not a module for the enhancement of gameplay features, but is more of an administrative tool.

there are players who simply by their behaviour and interaction with others fall into the categories he has described.  i know when i am in a game and watching posts from characters, even first time players, precisely who will or will not be causing issues with the other players and staff.

to me his idea is a form of monitoring players by their own innate behaviour. this is not an alignment concept that players would not even be aware existed, hence they would not be inclined to act one way or the other.

This is a good idea.  This would be quite helpful in determining new moderators in a game if the time does call for some.  Forgive me but I am a novice at reading code but Nightborn, are you suggesting that it increases it by one or decreases it by one depending on the action of the player?

Cause if it was just giving points or taking them away, it would be hard to say how many points should be awarded for what action.  Where as one point incriments would be good.

I know I am not exactly typing clearly here and for that I apologize.
